Irrigation Minister reviews Egypt’s water efforts at COP27

Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sweilam participated in a virtual meeting of the Water and Climate Coalition Leaders Committee on Wednesday.

During his speech, Sweilam discussed the activities of the upcoming United Nations Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP27) – to be held in Sharm el-Sheikh in November – as Egypt seeks to include climate change issues. into the conference activities, placing the water sector at the top of the international climate agenda.

He added that the extreme weather phenomena that the world is already experiencing in many countries require the mobilization of international efforts in the field of adaptation and mitigation of the negative effects of climate change.

The minister also pointed out that Egypt — in cooperation with many international partners — has launched an international initiative to adapt the water sector to climate change during COP27 activities, inviting committee members to support this initiative. , which deals with water and climate. global challenges with a focus on developing countries.

Sweilam added that this initiative aims to achieve integration between water policies and scientific research to prepare future measures in the field of adaptation.

The initiative includes a number of axes aimed at rationalizing water use and improving water supply, linking water resource management policies to climate action at the national level for each country and work to improve early warning systems for crises and natural disasters.

He particularly stressed the need to provide the necessary support for the development and application of early warning systems in the field of water and climate at the regional level in order to increase the preparedness of all countries to deal with extreme weather events such as floods and droughts in a way that protects citizens from the dangers of climate change.
