Naver’s online shopping service adopts AI system to simplify customer reviews

SEOUL – With an artificial intelligence-based service, South Korean online shopping giant Naver will help shoppers easily access streamlined versions of customer reviews. Long, complicated reviews will be simplified into one or two sentences to speed up purchases.

Online reviews play a vital role in South Korea’s online shopping industry, which was worth around 16 trillion won ($ 13.9 billion) in 2020. According to a 2017 survey of 1,200 consumers aged 19 to 49, conducted by market research company Embrain, about 78.6 percent always checked customer reviews before purchasing a product online.

Naver said he published “Ai Review Summary”, a customer review service based on the hyperscale artificial intelligence (AI) language platform of the company “Hyper Clova. Hyperscale AI uses massive computer techniques to process the Big Data and Cloud Computing at Lightning Speed.

Hyper Clova would analyze, categorize and filter keywords included in online reviews and display simplified and summarized versions. “The sentences will be grouped together and created into a single, natural-looking sentence,” Naver said in a July 30 statement. Hyper Clova offers review summaries for some 4.4 million products listed in Naver’s “Furniture & Interiors” category. Reviews of other products will be simplified by Hyper Clova in the future.
